The first ever CHESHIRE HOME was established by Group Captain Leonard Cheshire in Le Court, New Hampshire, England in 1948 with just one resident. From this modest start, there are over 200 homes and services throughout the world with 23 of them in India. Cheshire Homes India – Chennai, also referred to as the Chennai Cheshire Home (CCH) was started in 1958 on leased premises in Kovalam, south of Chennai, and an occupational therapy unit was set up in Manappakkam in 1984. Both these units were consolidated in a new building in December 1994 at Valmiki Nagar, Tiruvanmiyur, Chennai, on our own land thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Neela D’Souza, and building grants from The Leonard Cheshire Foundation. A grant from The Japanese Government and People of Japan enabled the extension of a clinic, physiotherapy center, and workshop unit which were opened in September 1999. CCH is a leading Non-Government Organization (NGO) registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975 with Serial Number: 181/2003 and celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2008 with the then Tamil Nadu Governor Shri. Surjit Singh Barnala as its Chief Guest. Residential care, medical and social counseling is provided for 13 male and 24 female PWDs with multiple disabilities. Each member has his/her own bank account, together with Disability Certificate.

CHESHIRE HOMES INDIA–CHENNAI (CCH) HAS BEEN DEDICATED TO EMPOWERING DIFFERENTLY-ABLED INDIVIDUALS SINCE 1958. LOCATED IN TIRUVANMIYUR, WE PROVIDE SHELTER, FOOD, MEDICAL CARE, AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING FOR THOSE WITH MULTIPLE DISABILITIES AND MENTAL CHALLENGES. OUR LIVELIHOOD RESOURCE CENTRE OFFERS TRAINING AND JOB PLACEMENTS, WHILE OUR DAY CARE CENTRE FOCUSES ON PERSONAL SKILLS AND PLAY THERAPY. THROUGH OUR VILLAGE OUTREACH PROGRAM, WE DELIVER ESSENTIAL SERVICES AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING TO DISABLED INDIVIDUALS IN NEARBY VILLAGES. CCH ALSO SUPPORTS DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS AND HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED WITH PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS, INCLUDING A VISIT FROM QUEEN ELIZABETH IN 1997.
